AI can make keyword research much faster, turning days of spreadsheet work into just a few hours. However, it can also suggest keywords that nobody searches for or that have little to no search volume.
As AI tools become more widely used, the competitive advantage lies less in generating keyword ideas and more in choosing the right ones – keywords that match your services, have a realistic chance of ranking on Google, and attract people who are likely to inquire about your services.

ToggleWhat AI Keyword Research Does and How AI Finds Keywords
AI keyword research uses language models and AI features to find, organize, and group search phrases. It helps you discover relevant search terms quickly without doing everything manually.
How does AI find keywords?
AI has the ability to understand the intent behind words as a whole instead of separate entities. For example it has the capability to see that “teeth replacement options” and “implants vs. bridges” go together as they are related to the issue of missing teeth. This in turn helps AI put forth related keywords which may not have come to your mind and also to determine what users are searching for. At the same time AI has its breaks.
In simple terms: AI provides keywords which you then validate with SEO data.
Comparing AI Assistants and Specialist Keyword Research Tools
| Option | Best for | Main limit | Use it to |
| AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) | Questions, intent labels, draft clusters | No independently verified volume or difficulty unless connected to reliable data | Widen the list |
| SEO platform with AI features (Semrush, Ahrefs, Nightwatch) | Volume, difficulty and SERP data beside AI suggestions | Paid plans; metrics still need interpretation | Narrow and validate |
| Search Console and Keyword Planner | Your own queries and Google’s planning data | Search Console reports queries for which your site has recorded impressions, not the entire market | Confirm existing visibility and explore demand |
A Practical AI Keyword Research Workflow
Follow these steps to research keywords for one service at a time. The examples below use a dental clinic that offers dental implants.
1. Start with your services, not just keywords
First put out what services you offer, who is your target customer for each, and what issues they come to you for. Also have AI present questions which customers may ask at any point from before they choose a service provider through to post purchase. Also use Google Search Console to see what terms people are using to find your site.
2. Find more specific keywords using AI
Ask AI to put forth better and more detailed keywords which include information like price, comparison, urgency, location or what the customer wants.
For example, instead of “dentures” which are very broad, we have “same day denture repair” which tells you more of the customer’s needs.
These specific keywords can help you find people looking for a particular service, although their search demand should still be verified using SEO data.
3. Group similar keywords together
Use AI to put keywords into groups based on intent which is what people are looking for as a result of which may not be the same as similar wording.
For example, two keywords may be put on the same page if what a person is looking for from them is the same. But if Google presents different types of results for those keywords they may need separate pages.
Also at times AI may put forth too many groups. Combine which are the same in terms of what people are looking for to also avoid having separate pages which will end up competing with each other.
4. Check keywords using real data
Use a tool for optimizing search engine rankings to find out how popular each keyword is. After that, go through the Google search results to learn about the nature of pages ranking well.
For example, when there are a number of comparative article pages ranking highly in Google searches for a particular keyword, then your dental implants services page will have difficulties ranking for the same keyword.
You should be targeting those keywords that relate to your business and have some proven search demand.
5. Choose which keywords to Target
Assign priority values to each cluster of keywords by assigning a score from 1 to 3 to each keyword based on four criteria:
- Business fit – How well is the keyword relevant to your services?
- Buyer intent – What are the chances that the person searching will become a customer?
- Potential ranking – How realistic is the ranking for your website in relation to this keyword?
- Search demand – how many people are looking for it?
Give twice the weight to business fit and buyer intent as traffic is less important than finding the right potential customer.
For instance, multiply business-fit and buyer intent scores by two and add ranking potential and search demand scores together. “Dental implants cost for one tooth” may be more valuable than “what is a dental implant”, despite its low volume, since the potential client may already be close to choosing a dentist and making an appointment.
The main idea: Use AI to discover and organize keywords, verify them with SEO data, and prioritise the ones most likely to bring relevant customers to your business.
Keyword Research as Qualified Leads & Landing Pages
Keywords grouping should be done on the basis of their specific use and the landing page appropriate for the keywords.
- Transactional keywords: Such keywords should be put on a service or a landing page where the customer can reach you via phone or form submission.
- Informational keywords: Put such keywords in supplementary blog posts providing information and answering questions of the clients and linking to the corresponding service page.
- Comparison keywords: Comparison blog posts comparing several services or choices.
Use clear link text
The anchor text is the clickable text found in a link. It makes it easy for the reader to understand what the page is all about, and it helps search engines determine the same thing as well.
In the following cases, “denture repair services” is the clear description of the page the user will get to when he clicks the link whereas, “click here” does not provide anything useful at all.
Use descriptive link text related to the topic. Link each keyword group to the most relevant page, and place links where readers would naturally want to learn more or take the next step.
When should you consider professional help?
Doing keyword research yourself can work well if your business offers only a few services, your website is simple, and you have time to review Google search results. However, you may need professional SEO support if:
- Your business offers several services or operates in multiple locations.
- Different keyword groups keep competing for the same pages.
- Your website traffic is growing, but customer inquiries are not.
- Nobody has enough time or expertise to check whether the chosen keywords are worth targeting.
In simple terms: Match the right keywords to the right pages, use clear links to guide visitors, and make it easy for potential customers to contact your business.
